MAGIC JACK - LIMITATIONS and Shortcomings, or is it a scam or ripoff?
Site Search by PicoSearch. Help
When I first saw MagicJack advertised on TV, it seemed like the greatest thing in telephone communication since the Ma Bell monopoly breakup.I immediately went to their website to see if this was for real.Anxious to sign up, I read all the information on their website.I determined that while this may work for some people, it would definitely not work for others. Therefore I think everyone should be aware of some of the Magic Jack limitations, which I have found.

You must add these exceptions if using a popup blocker:

You must also add these to your browser security “Warn me when sites try to install add-ons.”

Magic Jack takes up so much space that you cannot use any adjacent USB ports.

Magic Jack is easy to install but impossible to get it to work without assistance from tech support.
Your Magic Jack will not work until you register it.There are no instructions to tell you this fact, and there are no instructions to tell you how to register.Figure on at least an hour with a live chat person at will spend a lot of time on hold, as your chat person will likely be assisting multiple persons simultaneously.

*67 will not function.

You must dial an area code to make all outgoing calls; no more using only 7 numbers for local calls.

Computer must be ON to receive calls. If computer is off, callers can only leave voice mail.

You cannot use your existing phone number. So if you already have your phone number on business cards, ads, magnetic car signs, web pages, baseball caps, refrigerator magnets, pens, and other promotional material, you will have to change your number on everything you can and buy new business cards etc. However, MajicJack says this feature will be available in the future for additional fee.

MagicJack will only work with Windows 7, Windows XP or Vista. So if you have Win98 or 2000 or some other operating system, you are forced to install a new operating system on your computer whether or not you like or can afford Windows 7, XP, or Vista.

MagicJack will cause the screen saver and/or the monitor shutdown timer to not function in Windows 7.Your monitor will not shut off unless you manually turn it off.Your screen saver may not work.Your power management features will not work unless you unplug Magicjack.

You must have broadband, high-speed internet, cable internet, DSL, Wi-Fi or Wi-Max.MagicJack does not work over Dial-up or satellite internet. This means that unless you bring your own Wi-Fi connection with you, you will not be able to use it in most motels when travelling, or if you are in an area where only dial-up and satellite are available. However, the big hotels do usually have broadband for an extra fee. Some hotels or motels may block or restrict the connection however.

NOTE: MagicJack voicemail is set to 4 (four) rings by default. The ring count may not be changed at this time.

NOTE: You might have to use a powered USB hub if several phones are used, in order to generate more power from the USB port.

Fax may or may not work, or it may work sometimes. We do not officially support using faxing with magicJack.
